    Metacognitive Strategy: Theory, Application, and Its Influences on Students’ Listening Skill

    Abstract: Some researches show that listening skill is considered hard by the students. One of the causes is because they are are not aware at using listening strategies. Many students only listen to aural texts without knowing why they do the listening, why they get some difficulties in listening, and how to solve such problems. Thus, the teacher should be able to make the students become effective listeners. This can be done by teaching students to use listening strategies. These strategies include top-down, bottom-up, and metacognitive strategies. In this regard, the teacher can facilitate students with activities that enable them to develop their “metastrategic awareness” and use it in listening activities. If teachers succeed in providing the students with understanding and skills of listening strategies, they will be able to overcome difficulties they encountere while listening to a spoken text. Therefore, the teacher should have good understanding of concept, applications, and the influences of metacognitive strategies on students’ listening skill.
